TSA Serenity
Design Strategy + Interaction Design
Airport security is one of the most trying experiences that people have to go through. Poor signage, chaos, irrational rules, angry staff, physical ugliness all contribute to a highly unpleasant, stressful experience. For this project, we have investigated the current state of airport security, its underlying design issues and have mapped out a plan for its improvement. The key meanings we would like to deliver are Harmony, Justice and Security.
TSA Serenity was designed with the meanings Harmony, Justice and Security in mind. To that end, we created a physically beautiful space with carefully chosen colors and materials. Our solution includes a dedicated family line to give those that need it extra space and time. A regrouping area lets passengers pack their items and meet up with their fellow passengers in a calm and inviting space. In addition, an automated bin system and customized, timely information via kiosks will also promote a harmonious experience. On the security officer side, we have developed an employee engagement program to develop the sense of harmony between the TSA employees and the passengers passing through airport security. Justice is delivered through improved training of the TSOs by way of a Mentor/Coaching program. Security is delivered through backscatter screening and a mailbox system which allows passengers to mail home forbidden items such as pocketknives.
Our team presented our solution as an immersive experience on 3 large projector screens.
